That men from remote South Pacific islands were caught up in World War One's maelstrom says a lot about the war's sheer destructive power.
These men, Sergeant Pulu and Private Pineki, served in the New Zealand forces. They came from Niue, a small island which at the time was a colonial territory of New Zealand. Their photographs are part of a display commemorating Pacific soldiers in the Tangata o le Moana exhibition at Te Papa Tongarewa (Museum of New Zealand).
Sgt Pulu and Pte Pineki fought at Gallipoli in 1915. Both men died at sea while returning to New Zealand in the following year.
